Stabled in Gloucester Barnwood Engineers sidings is 97653, formerly PWM653. This Ruston and Hornsby 165DE shunter was one of five ordered by the WR Civil Engineers Department. PWM653 new in 1959 spent much of its time at Reading, 6/11/80

97653, (formerly PWM653), receives attention at Swindon Works in November 1983. The Western Region had a fleet of five of these diesel-electric shunters that worked mainly in the Civil Engineers pre-assembly depots like Taunton Fairwater yard. They would also be used in engineers' possessions.

The first deployment of PWM651 was to Radyr Yard, on the north-west outskirts of Cardiff, and where it was to spend much of its working life. PWM652 was sent to Taunton Fairwater PAD with PWM653 heading to Theale, between Reading and Newbury, and PWM654 initially to Hookagate, Shrewsbury, although it moved on to Newland PAD near Worcester in 1964.
