The Panzerkampfwagen IV (Pz.Kpfw. IV), commonly known as the Panzer IV, is a German medium tank developed in the late 1930s and used extensively during the Second World War. Its ordnance inventory designation was Sd.Kfz. 161 .

2024年11月2日 · Flakpanzer IV. After 1943, Germany began developing anti-aircraft tanks (Flakpanzer) to counter the ever-increasing Allied ground attacks. The first vehicle that saw service based on the Panzer IV was the Flakpanzer IV (3.7 cm Flak 43), generally known by its nickname, Möbelwagen. It was followed by two Flakpanzers equipped with open-top turrets.

The Panzer IV was thought of by Heinz Guderian in 1936 as a completement to the Panzer III used as mail battle tanks, to support the infantry and make breakthroughs with its 75 short barrel gun. However few have predicted that it would become the future workhorse of the Panzerdivision in 1942-45, as rearmed, and constantly evolving.

The Panzer IV H would become the ultimate backbone of the German Wehrmacht Panzer divisions from 1943 until the end of World War II due to its large numbers, firepower, and enhanced armour. From May 1943 onwards, the Panzer IV H, like many other German armoured vehicles, received 5 mm side skirt armour plates upgrades known as Schürzen.

2022年1月1日 · Krupp engineers simply rearmed one Panzer IV Ausf.D with the 5 cm KwK 39 L/60 gun. This gun greatly improved the Panzer IV’s anti-tank firepower compared to the original short-barrel 7.5 cm gun.

IV (along with the Pz. V, described below) formed the backbone of Germany’s panzer divisions from 1943 to the war’s end. The tank had the same engine and general appearance as the Pz. III, but the Pz. IV had a larger turret and gun, thicker frontal armour, and better cross-country mobility.
