The California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences at UC Berkeley (QB3-Berkeley) supports work at the interface of the physical, biological, and engineering sciences. Our award-winning researchers make discoveries and technologies that improve the human condition and help fuel our local and global economies.

QB3 Genomics’ mission is to make genomics research tractable and affordable to UC Berkeley and the greater genomics community. The VCGSL provides Sequencing Library QC and sequencing services. We operate Illumina MiSeq, NextSeq, and NovaSeq platforms, as well as PacBio Sequel II and Revio systems and Oxford Nanopore MinION and GridION systems.

Since 2005 QB3 has catalyzed a remarkable string of life science ventures designed to help bio-innovators commercialize their discoveries and inventions. QB3 has pioneered university-associated incubators and venture capital investment in biotech, pharma, medical devices and health technology.

QB3-Berkeley offers shared research facilities to provide advanced instrumentation, technologies, and materials, along with the technical leaders who manage them and provide expert service. The incubator is devoted entirely to wet-lab bioscience and offers lab and office space, shared and private, key equipment such as fridges, freezers, and centrifuges, cell culture rooms, conference rooms, an auditorium, and a core facility with sophisticated instruments.

QB3 founded and operates Bakar Bio Labs. Companies affiliated with QB3 brought in $942 million in funding in 2022. Bakar Bio Labs, UC Berkeley’s flagship incubator for biotech startups, was founded in partnership with QB3. It opened its doors to tenants in November 2021.

QB3 assists life science entrepreneurs seeking to commercialize their research. In UC Berkeley, QB3 operates one full-service incubator, Bakar Labs, which is situated in the Bakar BioEnginuity Hub at Woo Han Fai Hall, and the smaller QB3 Garage@Berkeley space at Stanley Hall. [13]

QB3 operates a network of incubators, providing laboratory space for early-stage biotech companies, including two on the UC Berkeley campus, the QB3 Garage@Berkeley in Stanley Hall, and, in collaboration with the Bakar BioEnginuity Hub, Bakar Labs.

The QB3 MacroLab is a core facility administered by QB3-Berkeley. Located in UC Berkeley’s Stanley Hall and directed by Professor Susan Marqusee, the QB3 MacroLab offers automated gene cloning and recombinant protein expression and purification services.
