Qiu Fazu[1] (Chinese: 裘法祖; pinyin: Qiú Fǎzǔ; December 6, 1914; Hangzhou, Zhejiang – June 14, 2008; Wuhan, Hubei) [2] was a Chinese surgeon and politician. He was a saviour of Jewish prisoners. In the People's Republic of China, he is considered the father of modern Chinese surgery. [citation needed]

He is remembered in China and Germany as much for his personal courage as his medical achievements.

2008年6月18日 · Qiu Fazu, a surgeon and pioneer of organ transplantation in China, passed away on Saturday in Wuhan Tongji Hospital in Hubei province. Professor Zhao Xici of Tongji Hospital, who is 72 and had worked with Qiu since 1961, cannot believe he is dead.

Facing the Nazis, Qu Fazu, acting as surgeon-in-charge in Germany in 1945 saved over 40 Jewish prisoners who were on the brink of death with his medical skills, intelligence and courage. After that Qiu, along with doctors and nurses who assisted him saving the Jews made a "gentlemen's agreement", deciding to "cover it up forever".
