Quest offers two methods of vitamin D [25(OH)D] testing that can help you regularly assess at-risk patients, identify vitamin D deficiency and disorders, and manage deficiency once diagnosed.

Calcitriol 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D - This test measures the bioactive form of vitamin D. It is used in the differential diagnosis of hypocalcemia and to monitor patients with renal osteodystrophy or chronic renal failure.

Vitamin D levels <20 ng/mL are considered vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D deficiency may lead to elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels (secondary hyperparathyroidism). If your patients' test results reveal that they are vitamin D deficient, the Endocrine Society recommends that they receive vitamin D supplementation.
