This RS 54 was restored to its current condition and configuration by former BMW factory racer Kurt Busch in the mid-1980s, which saw the engine, gearbox and driveshaft of Gustav Pape’s World Championship-winning motorcycle transplanted onto its frame.

With its 45 hp, DOHC 500cc boxer two-cylinder engine, gear-driven solid-shaft final drive — no chains — and Earles-type front fork, the RS 54 sported some of the most advanced technology of the era. And all that engineering showed on the racetrack, with BMW factory riders winning multiple Tourist Trophies and sidecar world championships.

2012年12月31日 · This unique BMW Rennsport RS54 has a distinctive Bartl-style ‘duckbill’ fairing, the duckbill was thought to split airflow around the fairing and improve the “slipperiness” of the bike as a whole. The DOHC engine was advanced for the day and is directly traceable as one of the forefathers of the modern, BMW boxer engines.

2017年1月15日 · By late 1953 BMW brought out the 500 CC Rennsport (Racing Sport), a bevel gear driven dual overhead cam high compression racing motor that was very fast. Walter Zeller was the only factory rider to have consistent success on the RS54 winning the German championship in 1954 and ‘55 while finishing 7th and 2nd in the world championships.
