Unmistakable for its giant rotating dish, the airliner sized E-3D Sentry, also known as AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System), recently flew its final operational mission before retirement later this year.

Derived from the Boeing 707 airliner, it provides all-weather surveillance, command, control, and communications, and is used by the United States Air Force, NATO, French Air and Space Force, Royal Saudi Air Force and Chilean Air Force. The E-3 has a distinctive rotating radar dome (rotodome) above the fuselage.

2021年8月4日 · The Boeing E-3D Sentry aircraft flew its final operational sortie as part of the counter-Daesh Op Shader last month. The aircraft from 8 Squadron had been deployed to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus and was the latest and last deployment since 2015.

At the time, Boeing’s E-3A Sentry Airborne Warning And Control System (AWACS) platform – already in service with the US Air Force and the newly established NATO AEW and Control Force (NAEW&CF) – was the obvious choice. In February 1987, the RAF ordered six E-3D Sentry AEW1s (serials ZH101–ZH106), alongside a French order for four E-3Fs.
