The Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.8 is a British single-seat fighter of the First World War designed at the Royal Aircraft Factory. It could not escape the drag penalty imposed by its tail structure and was no match for the Albatros fighters of late 1916.

2018年2月13日 · The Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.8 ("FE" = "Fighter Experimental") recorded a first-flight in September of 1915 and adopted for service with the Royal Flying Corps of Britain on August 2nd, 1916.

Designed by the Farnborough team, headed by John Kenworth, an unarmed F.E.8 prototype took to the air for the first time on 15 October 1915. The following month, in service trials at the Central Flying School at Upavon, the F.E.8 was found to be stable, manoeuvrable and easy to land.

In 1915, the Royal Aircraft Factory introduced its “Fighter Experimental,” F.E.8. When the aircraft was designed, a suitable method of synchronizing machine gun fire through revolving propeller blades had not yet been developed by the allies.

Designed under the direction of John Kenworthy, the F.E.8 was the first single-seat fighter evolved as such at Farnborough, where the first of two prototypes was flown on 15 October 1915.

Powered by a 110hp Gnome Monosoupape, the FE8 was employed as a single-seat fighter on the Western Front from summer 1916 to early 1917 but its speed of 80mph (130kph) and single Lewis gun meant that it was hopelessly outclassed. The type also served with Reserve Squadrons in the UK as here with 6401 with 10 Reserve Squadron at Joyce Green.

After rectification of the tendency of early production aircraft to spin as the RFC/RAF’s most widely used type of Corps reconnaissance aircraft from 1917 it served with some 21 Squadrons and as well as the Western Front. R.E.8s operated in Italy and Palestine and finally in Egypt until November 1920.
