This article presents a reasonable solution by introducing a new clasp design as a modification to the well-known RPA clasp. The design includes a mesial rest, proximal plate, and buccal retentive arm arising from the rest and extending to reach the distal retentive undercut.

1983年1月1日 · RPA CLASP DESIGN The RPA clasp was developed to deal with the problems encountered with the use of the RPI clasp. The initials signify rest, proximal plate, and Akers clasp arm. The mesial rest and proximal plate are designed identically to those of the RPI clasp.

Results indicate that, (1) The RPA clasp was the most retentive of all on natural abutments, against both directions of pull, but only slightly so over the RPI clasp with a vertical pull. (2) The Akers clasp was most retentive against a mesio-occlusal pull on the gold abutments.

The clasp is simple in design with few variations among patients and thus can be easily and consistently fabricated by dental laboratories. But most important, the circumferential retentive arm avoids the tissue problems around abutment teeth and allows the RPA clasp to be used in many situations where the RPI clasp is contra-indicated.
