The story of the man behind the RCA 44 and 77 ribbon microphones
2017年5月18日 · Without a doubt, the two most famous ribbon microphones are the RCA 44 and 77. Both were invented and patented by Harry Olson. The 77 microphone was the very first ribbon microphone designed and introduced by RCA. It was rumored to have been in development as early as 1929 but wasn’t officially announced until 1932.

The Photophone PB-31 had a limited production. It is estimated that only fifty were made, being replaced by the 44-A just a few months later, in 1932. (Images of a 44-A can be seen below.) The succession of RCA ribbon and magnet velocity microphones was rooted in the elegant, machine-age design of the Photophone PB-31.

The first of the 44 family was the 44A, a large microphone, although considerably smaller than the 77A. It used a large horseshoe magnet around the ribbon and featured a figure-8 pickup pattern. The slightly larger 44B was introduced in about 1938.

Beautiful sounding early 1930s RCA 44-A Ribbon Microphone. The 44-A was the higher quality predecessor to the 44BX and features an improved bass response and wonderful tonal quality. The sound quality is on par with my vintage KU-2A.

2025年1月15日 · Many years ago I acquired an early RCA "44" type microphone from the US (I live in Germany). It was advertised as "RCA 44A RIBBON MICROPHONE TV UMBER GRAY!!!!!". There was no nameplate. It had been completelty refinished and restored by the late Clarence Kane (which, it seems to me, is the best what could happen to such a mic).

The RCA Model 44A is the oldest non-lavalier Ribbon Microphone in Mr. Steele's, having been manufactured around 1933. The RCA Type 50A was manufactured in 1934, and the RCA Model MI4010, featured in the gallery below, in 1935.

Model 44-A is the larger of the two models and has a frequency range of 30 to 16,000 cycles. Model PB-90 is somewhat smaller and has a frequency range of to 30- 6,000 cycles. This microphone is the rare Chrome version and in excellent condition as shown. It includes the mounting hardware and hardwired XLR cable.
