2019年3月6日 · The jury selected RCR and Coussée & Goris due to the contextuality of their project (the form of their building mimics the bend in the river), and the many new green public spaces it promised to introduce. ‘De Krook is an urban piazza,’ the architects explain, ‘and a model for European libraries of the future.’

The new media library located in Ghent’s historic center presents a stack of horizontal slabs in what is a highly flexible volume. A series of external metal louvers set before the facade of the media library serves to protect the building against sunlight, accentuate its horizontal character, and give it a look of weightlessness.

The new media library, in the center of Ghent, sits at a bend of the krook, the canal that runs through the city and reaches its lowest level at this point, marking the two ‘zero levels’ of the city: that of the canal itself and that of the many bridges crossing it.

De Krook is the new city library of Ghent. The stark metallic structure contrast with the historic monuments of the city and lies along the waterfront. What used to be a neglected corner of the city is now a 'balcony to the city'.

Both Coussée & Goris architecten and RCR Arquitectes are both influenced by the Arte Povera, they both urge on an honest approach towards the material. Opting for this practice of rawness where construction materials are left exposed, demands an immaculate finishing, with a high sense for technical detail and precision.

De Krook is the new city library of Ghent, designed by Spanish architecture firm RCR Arquitectes and the Belgian firm Coussée & Goris architecten, after a competition in 2010. The monumental building, which incorporates works by artist Michaël Borremans, intended as an ‘open house for knowledge and innovation' and cultural catalyst to the city.
