In Red Dead Redemption, Seth Briars' insanity was triggered by his obsession with treasure hunting. After his partner Moses Forth stole a piece of a treasure map, Seth's fixation on recovering it resulted in him losing his family, business, and mental stability. His father's departure is also hinted as a potential factor in his mental decline.

After spending so much time around the dead he is seemingly immune to zombie interests and plays cards with his former partner Moses Forth who has risen from the grave - much to John's surprise. Seth is unfazed by the zombie presence but gets very upset when he's told that folks are blaming him for it.

When Seth gives the player the Pardon Letter and walks inside the Telegraph Office, the player can either kill or untie Moses. Sometimes when shooting Moses in the head, he will stop squirming for a moment, and then resume as though nothing had happened; it takes a second or third shot to finish him off.

Moses, Seth Briars' former treasure hunting partner, was caught exhuming and is now locked up somewhere in Benedict Point. Seth wants the treasure map Moses has with him. You'll have to help Seth get his map back before he'll help you. Mount your horse and start following Seth toward Benedict Point.

After a rocky introduction he'll explain that he hates people for making him crazy. John manages to get Seth to talk a little more and finds out that Seth's partner, Moses Forth, stole half of Seth's map. Moses is being held by the law at Benedict Point for exhuming graves.
