Known as “Kent’s Mainline in Miniature”, our World Famous one-third full size Steam & Diesel locomotives have powered their way along the 13½ miles of track from the Cinque Port town of Hythe, terminating in Dungeness; a National Nature Reserve and one of the largest shingle landscapes in the world.

The RH&DR has been drawing crowds since it opened in 1927 and now operates the most complete collection of one-third full-sized steam locomotives in the world. These small but perfectly-formed trains, take just over an hour to complete the full journey from Hythe to Dungeness but there are opportunities to get off and explore along the way too.

After another 15 minutes, the centre of the marshland “Romney Marsh”, the eponymous town of New Romney, is reached via stops at “St. Mary’s Bay” and “Romney Warren Halt”. This is the operational centre of the RH&DR with a seven-track covered station, turntable, coaling plant and boiler house as well as repair shop.

With 4 stations in between, all within walking distance of a beach, our railway provides you with an opportunity to explore this unique corner of Kent. Coast & country walks, with all manner of wildlife & flora to be seen, cycle rides, medieval churches and iconic lighthouses are all on our doorstep.
