Reaktionsmotor 12 (RM12) is a low-bypass afterburning turbofan jet engine developed for the Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighter. A version of the General Electric F404, the RM12 was produced by Volvo Aero (now GKN Aerospace Engine Systems).

The result of the major redesign was RM12, an engine that met all mission requirements for Gripen, at a low lifecycle cost. RM12 also boasted of a relatively simpler design and lesser weight compared to its predecessor. With this powerful engine, Gripen has flown for over 300,000 hours so far without any engine-related accidents.

The RM12 is a derivative of the successful F404 turbofan, developed originally by the U.S. Navy for its Boeing F/A-18 Hornet. GE and Volvo Aero Corporation have developed the RM12 to power the Saab/BAE Systems JAS39 Gripen, a multi-role fighter, attack and reconnaissance aircraft.

The General Electric F404 and F412 are a family of afterburning turbofan engines in the 10,500–19,000 lbf (47–85 kN) class (static thrust). The series is produced by GE Aerospace. Partners include Volvo Aero, which builds the RM12 variant. The F404 was developed into the larger F414 turbofan, as well as the experimental GE36 civil propfan.
