On offshore rigs mean sea level (MSL) is normally the standard for geological evaluation. However, a working measured depth reference (MD) is used whilst drilling, normally taken from the top of the rotary table. This is designated MDBRT (measured depth below rotary table) or MDBKB (measured depth below kelly bushing).

In a project, all wells and traces are referenced to MSL enabling objects to be compared to each other. Seismic is Measured from MSL or SRD; Well data is most commonly referenced to KB, DF or RT. Checkshots are most commonly referenced to SRD, MSL and sometimes KB; GL or ML(WB) can also be used but are not as common.

Mean Sea Level (MSL) is the default System Datum. This datum is commonly used, but in specific areas other system datums are commonly used. For example, in parts of Western Europe Normaal Amsterdams Peil (NAP) is used. System Datum Elevation

It is the vertical distance from the mean sea level MSL (Z sol ) to the wellbore curvature , measured from the directional survey. MD "Measured Depth" . It is calculated from the survey depth , along the well path from the wellhead to that reservoir station .

Air Gap measured to MSL is calculated and displayed. Air Gap is the distance from ground level/sea level to the rig floor, and is used in some calculations for hydrostatic head. The application calculates Air Gap as follows: (Air Gap, offshore wells) = Datum Elevation – Elevation (relative to System Datum)
