Radial EUS was the first to be developed and provides a 360-degree view in a plane perpendicular to that of the scope, similar to a computed tomography (CT) image (Fig 2). Linear EUS provides a localised oblique image parallel to the scope and enables therapeutic intervention under ultrasound (Fig 3).

EUS can be performed using either radial or linear echoendoscopes. The former provides imaging with a 360° view similar to computer tomography (CT), while the latter provide a narrower sector longitudinal imaging, which is important to allow real time tracking of a puncture needle, crucial for EUS-guided interventions.
