Call signs in the United States are identifiers assigned to radio and television stations, which are issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and, in the case of most government stations, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA).

One of the biggest things to come out of this gathering was the assignment of certain letters to certain countries, to identify their radio and television signals – America was given W, K, N, and A (fun fact: Canada got ‘C’ and Mexico got ‘X’).

All broadcast call signs in the United States begin with either K or W, with "K" usually west of the Mississippi River and "W" usually east of it. Initial letters AA through AL, as well as N, are internationally allocated to the United States but are not used for broadcast stations.
