Ranil Wickremesinghe (Sinhala: රනිල් වික්‍රමසිංහ; Tamil: ரணில் விக்கிரமசிங்க; born 24 March 1949) is a Sri Lankan politician who served as the ninth president of Sri Lanka from 2022 to 2024. Previously, he served as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka from 1993–1994, 2001–2004, 2015–2018, 2018-2019 and in 2022.

Prof Wickramasinghe’s research interests are in membrane science and technology. His research focuses on synthetic membrane-based separation processes for purification of pharmaceuticals and biopharmaceuticals, treatment and reuse of water and for the production of biofuels.

Ranil Wickremesinghe is the current Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. Born in a politically influential Buddhist Sinhalese family, he joined politics while he was still a university student. Although he is a lawyer by profession, he has devoted his life to politics from the very start and received his first ministerial post at the age of 28.

Prof Ranil Wickramasinghe obtained his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Melbourne, Australia. He obtained his PhD, also in Chemical Engineering, from the University of Minnesota.
