Rebbe means “my master” or “my teacher.” Whether you are a small child learning the alef-bet, or an expert scholar sailing the seas of the Talmud, you call your teacher “rebbe.” There’s another meaning to the title “rebbe,” one especially associated with a rabbi they called the Baal Shem Tov.

Born in 1902, on the 11th day of Nissan, in Nikolaev, Russia, the Rebbe is the son of the renowned kabbalist and talmudic scholar, the late Rabbi Levi Yitzchak and Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson. He is the great-grandson—and namesake—of the third Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch.

On a basic level, the Rebbe is the teacher, guide, and leader of the chassidim, and the chassidim are the students who internalize the Rebbe’s teachings, follow his directives, and are empowered by him to properly fulfill their G‑dly mission. In a manner unique to Chassidus, this relationship is characterized by utmost dedication and love.1
