The regal horned lizard is a small, flat lizard about the size of the palm of a human's hand. It has spikes all around the lateral surface of its body. It is 3–4 in (117 mm) in length from nose to tail as a full adult, and pale grey to yellow-brown or reddish in color, topped with dark blotches alongside the body and back.

Regal horned lizards are carnivores which will feed on invertebrates such as spiders and ants which are a primary component on their diet. In a single meal each lizard can consume as many as 2500 ants. They find a column of ants and quickly eat as many as possible. They do not remain there long so that they can avoid being mobbed by the ants.

The Regal Horned lizard is characterized by one row of lateral abdominal fringe scales upon a wide, flattened, toad-like body. The tail is short and broad at the base. Four large occipital horns at the base of the head continuous with six temporal horns, form a large crown of ten sharp, pointed horns along the base of the head.

Phrynosoma solare, the regal horned lizard, is restricted to the Sonoran Desert in south-central Arizona east to extreme southwestern New Mexico, south through most of Sonora (including Isla Tiburon) and into northern Sinaloa, Mexico.
