The Renault Voiturette (Renault Little Car) was Renault 's first ever produced automobile, and was manufactured between 1898 and 1903. [1][2] The name was used for five models. The first Voiturettes mounted De Dion-Bouton engines. Continental tires were used for the car, a make still used for several modern Renaults today.

On February 25, 1899, the automobile manufacturing company Renault Frères was founded. The lightweight, well-designed voiturette already showed many of the features of modern automobile engineering, with a front-mounted engine, transmission by shaft with universal joint, and a direct-drive gearbox patented by Louis Renault.

For his 1st car, Renault placed the emphasis on robust design. For the Voiturette Type B, the key note was comfort. Renault joined forces with a brilliant body designer, Labourdette, who drew the elegant cabin. Even though the chassis was the same as on the Voiturette Type A, the car looked completely different.

Type B - 1899 Wanting to make sure his customers were comfortable, Louis Renault introduced the Type B, often considered to be one of the world’s first cars with an interior driving position. While offering features of the Type A (direct-drive gearbox, driveshaft transmission), the Type B was a more powerful model.

Renault's first car was fitted with a single-cylinder water- cooled engine made by de Dion-Bouton, with bore and stroke of 66x80mm and of 273 cc. This front-mounted engine developed 1.3kW (1.75hp). The Voiturette weighed as little as 350kg (7701b) and with two passengers it had a top speed of 32km/h (20mph).
