Retrotransposons are mobile genetic elements capable of autonomous transposition via RNA intermediates (Boeke et al. 1985). They are widespread in eukaryotes and often make up a large proportion of their genomes. In maize, for example, it has been estimated that at least 50% of the genome is derived from retrotransposons (SanMiguel et al. 1996).
