Classical Roman theatre masks were a highly developed and well understood part of every day life. They were frequent in art and had easily recognisable associations to specific characters, much like we would easily recognise Punch and Judy.

2013年8月27日 · A hallmark of the tragic and grotesque theater in ancient Rome were the colorful and expressive masks (caricature). They accompanied the Roman theater play as a heroic choir, using songs, lively gestures, songs and movements.

The Roman theatre mask is a distinctive characteristic of ancient interpretative arts. Wearing the mask played a significant role in the actor’s mental state and physical character embodiment. At its best the theatre masks enabled a metamorphosis of the actor’s individuality and linking it with that of the audience.

Comedies improvised from scenarios based upon the domestic dramas of the ancient Roman comic playwrights Plautus (c. 254–184 bce) and Terence (c. 195–c. 159 bce) and upon situations drawn from anonymous ancient Roman mimes flourished under the title of commedia dell’arte.
