A rosette sampler (also known as a CTD-rosette or carousel) is a device used for water sampling in deep water. Rosette samplers are used in the ocean and large inland water bodies such as the North American Great Lakes in order to investigate quality.

A CTD is a series of small probes that can be deployed independently or incorporated into a variety of observing platforms such as remotely operated vehicles, gliders, or fixed observing buoys. On exploration vessels, a CTD is often attached to a larger metal water sampling array known as a rosette that is lowered into the water via a cable.

The CTD measures conductivity (which helps determine salinity), temperature, and depth. This particular CTD runs profiles of the water column (surface to bottom) and along the way, collects discrete water samples (at specific predetermined depths) using the rosette of niskin bottles.

The rosette includes conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) sensors, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll fluorescence, and a transmissometer to detect particles in the water column.

Seawater samples are analyzed onboard for salinity, oxygen, nutrients & chlorophyll-a to cross-check and correct CTD sensor measurements. CalCOFI began deploying a 24-bottle CTD-Rosette in August 1993, with test casts beginning in March 1990.
