U.S. Route 401 (US 401) is a north–south United States highway, a spur of U.S. Route 1, that travels along the Fall Line from Sumter, South Carolina to Interstate 85 near Wise, North Carolina.

Pennsylvania Route 401 (PA 401) is a 20.2-mile-long (32.5 km) east–west state route in Berks and Chester counties, located in southeast Pennsylvania. The western terminus is at PA 23 in Caernarvon Township, across the county line from Elverson.

U.S. Route 401 Business (US 401 Bus) was established in 1960 as a renumbering of US 401A through downtown Laurinburg, it has remained unchanged since. [2]

Construction is underway to upgrade the intersection of U.S. 401 at Ligon Mill Road and Mitchell Mill Road in Raleigh to reduce congestion and improve traffic in the area. Due to the increase in traffic at the intersection of U.S. 401 and Perry Creek Road, this project has been expanded to include improvements to this intersection.

US 401 appeared in 1957 as an addition to US 15 from the South Carolina line to Laurinburg, then replaced US 15-A to Raleigh, then replaced NC 59 to its endpoint of US 1-158 in Norlina.

Creation: Appeared in 1957 as a renumbering of US 15 ALT from Sumter via Darlington to Society Hill, then added to US 15 into North Carolina. This is the 2nd US 401 in South Carolina.
