It is widely accepted that Route 66 can be completed in 2 weeks - only visiting the most popular sights and attraction and major cities - but a 3 to 4 week trip would be preferable. Of course, you could spend months traveling the road but for most this is unachievable.

Most Route 66 road trips tend to require one-way car hire (for example, picking up in Chicago and dropping off at LA). If you only plan on driving the car one-way then be sure to uncheck the box that says "Return car to the same location". Be aware that there's always a one-way fee applicable if you want to drop the car off at a different location.
