The Quran describes the rūḥ in various ways. It refers to ruh as (Arabic: الروح القدس al-rūḥ al-qudus), which means "the holy spirit" and ar-rūḥ al-amin, which means "the faithful" or "trustworthy spirit", terms that are commonly understood to be references to the archangel Gabriel.

2024年5月24日 · “Al-Ruh” (the soul) can be referred to in both masculine and feminine forms. Hence, it can be called a pure “ruh” (soul) or “ruhan tayyiban”. It is said to be feminized because it is synonymous with “nafs” (self).

The Quran seems to suggest two types of 'ruh'. One remains a reference to the Holy Spirit (ruh al-qudus) and the other to God's Divine Energy which includes his command (ruh min-amr / min ruhi). Often used interchangeably with nafs (self), although Sufis distinguish between ruh as the higher principle of soul and nafs as the “lower” or “animal” self.

In Shia Islam, rūḥ is described as "a creature (khalq) of God, grander than Gabriel or Michael", who was sent to inform and guide Muhammad and is now with the Imams. In some Shia traditions, ruh al-qudus (spirit of holiness) is one of the five spirits possessed by the Imam.

The term is often used in Arabic language to indicate what makes bodies alive and therefore we may talk about specific mineral's ruh, vegetal's ruh, animal ruh, human's ruh, etc.. From the Qur'an we understand it is a creation that Allah attributes directly to Himself.
