Rus is the Director of Highline's MaST Center, the marine lab and aquarium located about 10 minutes south of the main campus. He also enjoys teaching Marine Biology and Oceanography classes.

Rus Higley was recently named the 2016 Marine Educator of the Year by the Northwest Aquatic and Marine Educators (NAME).

Three Western Washington University alumni have turned their passion for the ocean and its creatures into careers with the MaST Center Aquarium located at Highline College.

Rus is a School of Ice (SOI ) grad twice, both in a face to face several years ago and last year virtually. As a faculty member at Highline College, near Seattle, he teaches marine biology and oceanography and has used some of the SOI modules in his classes and hopes to eventually create an entire SOI class someday.
