Rutland Railway ALCo RS-3 207 switches a milk train car at Brandon, Vermont, in August 1955 — in the days when "milk run" was still a literal description of a local train. Unit 207 came from ALCo-GE in 1952, in the railroad's class DRS-6c. All Rutland RS-3s were sold to the Louisville & Nashville in 1963, and this locomotive became L&N 263.

Perhaps more than any other locomotive the RS3 defined Alco as a locomotive manufacturer offering eye-appealing, classy designs with their trademark belching black smoke. While the RS1 and RS2 had sold relatively well perhaps it was the RS3's extra 100 horsepower over its predecessor that really appealed to railroads.

Rutland RS3 #203 crosses the northern islands of Lake Champlain (South Hero, Grand Isle, and North Hero) via its marble, riprap causeway with what appears to be a milk train during the 1950s. Today, the right-of-way is the Island Line Rail Trail.
