Urdu (/ ˈʊərduː /; اُردُو, pronounced [ʊɾduː] ⓘ, ALA-LC: Urdū) is an Indo-Aryan language spoken chiefly in South Asia. It is the national language and lingua franca of Pakistan.

SAY sounds like the English “s”. There are two other letters that sound like “s” in Urdu: SEEN (س) and SWĀD (ص). They are not interchangeable: you must learn which words use which letter. SEEN is the most common, SWĀD is next most common, and SAY is quite rare. SAY can connect from both sides.

Swad and zwad are similar-looking letters, except that zwad has a dot.
