2023年8月17日 · The purpose of a Section 136 Suite, sometimes known as a mental health suite is to serve as a place of safety for individuals who are detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act 1983 in England and Wales. A person can be detained under Section 136 if they have a mental illness and there is an immediate need for ‘care or control’.

Police must consult mental health professionals, if practicable, before using s136. Section 136 cannot be used if the mentally disordered person is in a private dwelling or the private garden or buildings associated with that place. Other than this exception, s136 can be used in any other setting (including an Emergency Department).

As the first modular S136 Suite in the NHS, this project represents a significant innovation for the NHS, successfully implementing Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) while adhering to the stringent safety and security standards of a mental health facility.”

A police officer is required by new S136(1c) to consult one of a list of specified healthcare professionals, where it is practicable to do so, before deciding whether or not to keep a person at, or remove a person to, a place of safety under S136.

The health-based place of safety for young people detained under S136/135 of the Mental Health Act is often referred to as an ‘S136 suite’ or ‘S136 facility’. The S136 suite may be located on an adult in-patient unit, an adolescent mental health in-patient unit or in a separate facility, for example, a facility linked to an A&E department.

Police waiting area and 136 suite: If a 136 suite is available when the Service User arrives at the MHBPoS escorted by police, the 136 Coordinator and police will complete a joint risk assessment (See ‘136 pack’ in Appendices 1-8) and this will influence decisions around on-going police support within the MHBPoS.

A Section 136 suite is a facility for people who are detained by the Police under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act. It provides a ‘place of safety’ whilst potential mental health needs are assessed under the Mental Health Act and any necessary arrangements made for on-going care.

Accommodation, sometimes referred to as a 136 suite, is provided at St. George’s Hospital, Stafford and The Redwoods Centre, Shrewsbury. Both the suite at St. George’s Hospital and The Redwoods is able to meet the needs of both adults and children if required.

Sunflowers Court, Goodmayes Hospital has two Section 136 suites, and regularly receives such detained persons. The s136 Suite will provide a “place of safety” whilst potential mental health needs are assessed under the Mental Health Act, and any necessary arrangements will be put in place for their on-going care.
