This is a timeline of the history of S4C (Welsh pronunciation: [ˌɛs ˌpɛdwar ˈɛk], Sianel Pedwar Cymru, meaning Channel Four Wales), originally the fourth-oldest terrestrial television channel in Wales. Until 2010 it carried a mixture of Welsh language programmes and programmes from Channel 4 which was not broadcast on analogue TV in Wales.

S4C had been set up to provide Welsh language programmes and broadcast Channel 4 programmes when Welsh language programmes were not being shown. It was therefore inevitable that not all Channel 4 programmes could be broadcast.

S4C, or Sianel Pedwar Cymru (Channel Four Wales in English) first broadcast on November 1, 1982. It was a result of the 1980 broadcasting act, which promised a dedicated Welsh language channel after complaints that not enough Welsh language programming was being shown on HTV Wales or BBC Wales.
