My understanding is that SATA 4 (presumably 12 Gbps) will not be released. However, it will have a place on motherboards for many years to come until optical drives and large capacity spinning disks are obsoleted.

Mar 31, 2021 · There are usually 4 PCIe lanes that all onboard devices share, SAS/SATA/Ethernet/M2 and whatnot. Just using all the M2 slots on the board can max that out. If you use additional drives via the onboard SATA controller, they might already be throttled or some ports might even be deactivated.
