The Re 420, originally and still widely called Re 4/4 II, [3] are a series of versatile standard gauge electric locomotives of Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS), but are also used by BLS AG (BLS Re 420.5) [4] and private companies (previously also by the Swiss Südostbahn, SOB).

Die Re 4/4 I ist eine ab dem Jahr 1946 gebaute leichte elektrische Schnellzuglokomotive der Schweizerischen Bundesbahnen, kurz SBB, die in zwei unterschiedlichen Serien gebaut wurde. Diese Lokomotiven sind die ersten Drehgestelllokomotiven der SBB.

The units from this final order are the only ones to feature rectangular halogen headlights straight from the factory, whereas all other Re 4/4 II and Re 4/4 III electric locomotives (as well as the Re 6/6 electric locomotives) were only equipped with low-range round headlights.

Re 4/4 II "Swiss Express" is a special series out of the total of 276 units delivered. It was equipped with automatic center coupling for the use on the intercity line between Geneva-Berne-Zürich-St. Gallen from 1975 until 1982.
