The Sea-Based X-band radar (SBX-1) is a floating, self-propelled, mobile active electronically scanned array early-warning radar station designed to operate in high winds and heavy seas. It was developed as part of the United States Department of Defense Missile Defense Agency's (MDA) Ballistic Missile Defense System.

The Sea-Based X-Band Radar (SBX) is part of the U.S. Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) and is designed to detect and establish precise tracking information on ballistic missiles, discriminate missile warheads from decoys and debris, provide data for updating ground-based interceptors in flight, and assess the results of intercept attempts.

On April 3, 2013, the U.S. Department of Defense stated that the SBX-1 mission was designed to provide radar coverage for possible missile launch threats anywhere in the world. At her speed of about nine knots, the voyage from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, to Japan would take about 16 days.
