The EMD GP16 is a series of rebuilt diesel-electric locomotives, a result of a remanufacturing program initiated by the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad (SCL) in an effort to spare the cost of purchasing new motive power in the late 1970s.

SCL rebuilt 155 GP16’s utilizing 3 shops from 1979 to 1982. The GP7’s, 9’s and 18’s were disassembled and inspected here. Uceta also handled the conversion from high nose to chopped nose and rewired the body. As reconditioned parts arrived from West Jax and Waycross shops they were reassembled at Uceta.

Although a new numbering system for the GP16's was initiated on April 1, 1984, Seaboard System retained the same GP16 numbers assigned by SCL and no changes were made. CSX implemented the new numbers in 1987. Dates of Operations for Seaboard System Railroad was January 1, 1983 to June 30, 1986.

2015年8月13日 · Another locomotive announced by Intermountain but not even listed on their site is the SCL Tampa GP16. I'm curious what paint scheme is the most popular. For some background on the GP16 there were a total of 161 units. 155 were done by SCL at their Uceta shops in Tampa.

SCL GP16 #4621 was built 9/1960 as Seaboard Air Line GP18 #408, later became SCL #1064 and was rebuilt to GP16 standards `n May 1980.

2024年12月31日 · SCL GP16 #4707 was originally a GP7 built as ACL 124, then re# SCL 712 where it remained until going into the Uceta GP16 rebuild program in Tampa. Later, in the CSX renumbering, it became CSX 1753, then went off roster and became INRD 1753

Most major railroads had major rebuild programs to prolong the lives of older locomotives. SCL had a program to update older GP7's, 9's and 18's which resulted in the successful GP16 program. While on my travels in 1984, I came across 3 examples. The last GP16's were retired by CSX between 1991 and 1993.
