The EMD SD40 is an American 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between January 1966 and August 1972. 1,268 locomotives were built between 1966 and 1972. In 1972, an improved version with new electronics was developed and marketed as a new locomotive, the SD40-2.

SD40 units #5500-5531 (DRF-30a) were delivered between July and December 1966. All were painted in the Maroon & Grey "Script" paint scheme.

2016年9月10日 · For a long time, the SD40 and the SD40-2 was the mainstay of the CPR (later CP Rail) locomotive fleet (from the 1960s to 1990s). The units were found across the country, but were especially useful in the mountains—which is why 5500 has found a home at Revelstoke.

5500 was the first of 64 SD40's delivered to CP in 1966-67 from GMD in London ON. Although the SD40's had some problems which caused CP to switch briefly to MLW for new power in the late 1960's, the later SD40-2's proved very reliable and were ordered in their hundreds by CP.

Canadian Pacific Railway 5500-5565 were GMD SD40 locomotives built in 1966-67. They were classed by CP as DRF-30a (5500-5531) and DRF-30b (5532-5564).

Canadian Pacific CP Rail SD40 This was the very first SD40 locomotive purchased by CP Rail in 1966 from GMD (General Motor of Canada). Unit no. 5500 is now in the process of being donated to the Revelstoke Railway Museum in Revelstoke, BC.
