Square hollow sections are often used for columns, however similarly to RHS sections, they are not often used as beams due to its shape that makes it difficult to bolt to other beams and vice versa. Available as hot SHSs, made at the mill as one piece, or cold rolled SHSs are made of a flat sheet rolled at right angles and welded.

It provides a number of short examples, in the form of calculation sheets, illustrating the design of structural hollow sections for beams and columns in buildings. All the examples were prepared by Miss M E Brettle and checked by Mr A S Malik of The Steel Construction Institute.
