Y1-motorvagnarna sattes efter hand in på nästan alla oelektrifierade järnvägar med persontrafik och spreds därmed över hela landet, från Ystad-Simrishamn i söder till Haparandabanan i norr. Motorvagnarna blev snabbt uppskattade för sina goda gångegenskaper även på dåliga skarvspår. Jämfört med Y6/Y7 var de dock tyngre och dyrare i drift.

Y1 är en dieseldriven motorvagn i Sverige byggd av Fiat Ferroviaria och Kalmar Verkstad som baseras på den italienska motorvagnen ALn 668. Under mitten av 1970-talet var SJ:s flotta av dieseldrivna motorvagnar (mest med Y6-generationen) relativt nersliten och gammal. En ny generation motorvagnar behövdes och blickarna riktades mot Centraleuropa.

SJ Y1 - YF1 (Private og Länstrafikbolag) Motorvogn litra Y1. Motorvognstypen ble bygget i Italia av FIAT Ferroviaria. Den første motorvognen kom til Sverige i begynnelsem av 1979 og prøvekjøringer ble kort tid deretter gjennomført i Östersundstraktene. Etter en tid ble 30 vogner bygget ved Kalmar Verkstad, av arbeidsmarkeds politiske årsaker.
