The SL600 was powered by Mercedes' M120 V12 engine, which was a 6.0L unit that generated 389hp. This power was sent to the rear wheels via a 5 speed automatic transmission. Production of the R129 SL600 lasted until 2002, but the model series remained in production as part of the R230 SL-Class, as the R230 Mercedes-Benz SL600.
