Canada's Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Action Plan is Canada's plan for the development, demonstration and deployment of SMRs for multiple applications at home and abroad. SMRs are a promising new technology that could unlock a range of benefits: economic, geopolitical, social, and environmental.

Advanced Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are a key part of the Department’s goal to develop safe, clean, and affordable nuclear power options. The advanced SMRs currently under development in the United States represent a variety of sizes, technology options, capabilities, and deployment scenarios.

Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) could be the future of Canada’s nuclear industry, with the potential to provide non-emitting energy for a wide range of applications, from grid-scale electricity generation to use in heavy industry and remote communities.

The Government of Canada has announced plans to develop a comprehensive hydrogen strategy. We will coordinate efforts between Canada’s SMR Action Plan and the Hydrogen Strategy for Canada as it is developed, and will seek opportunities for the two initiatives to be mutually-reinforcing.

New technologies, such as SMRs, offer a promising potential to generate electricity and heat, help decarbonize heavy industry and replace diesel in remote communities. We see significant potential to expand safe nuclear technologies—in Canada and around the world.

2024年10月3日 · NRCan introduced the Enabling Small Modular Reactors Program in 2023 to support the development of supply chains for SMR manufacturing and fuel and to fund research on SMR waste management solutions to ensure that SMRs and the waste they generate can be safely managed, now and into the future.

Small modular reactors (SMRs) generate between 10 and 300 MWe and are much smaller than Canada’s flagship CANDU reactors, which average around 700 MWe. SMRs are also modular, so many can be built together. These innovative reactors are designed to be built economically in factory conditions, rather than onsite.

SMR designs should be able to take nuclear to smaller power grids (Saskatchewan), off-grid (remote mines and northern communities), allow for greater load following (to replace fossil fuels) and support the integration of more intermittent renewables in the grid within hybrid systems.
