She was childless, unmarried, Jewish, a heavy smoker, wore tailored skirt-suits and accompanied her “girls” – female SOE agents – to airfields where she would then waive them goodbye. Tragically, many of Atkins’ “girls” – notably Noor Khan – were captured and executed.

Its agents demonstrated incredible courage and resourcefulness in their guerrilla war. By working with resistance forces, they provided a boost to the morale of occupied societies.
