The last ‘fixed-wing’ aircraft produced by Saunders-Roe Limited was the SR.53, a delta-wing, mixed-power (jet and rocket) interceptor of 1957. Despite early interest, it was overtaken commercially by the development of surface-to-air missiles and it was abandoned a year later.

The SR53 was a hybrid jet and rocket powered aircraft that first flew on 16th May 1957. Despite promising perforamnce the project was cancelled after 42 test flights. The only other completed example that flew crashed leaving this as the sole survivor. It is preserved in the superb RAF Museum Cosford Collection.
