The S.S. Gera was launched on November 8th, 1890. She was built by Fairfield Company of Glasgow for the North German Lloyd and made her maiden voyage from Bremen to Baltimore April 2nd 1891. From 1891 to 1907 it continued to make voyages from Bremen or Hamburg to Suez, Australia, the Far East, South America, New York, Baltimore, Genoa, and Naples.

The steamers of the "Dresden" and "Gera" class represented a new type, a combination of freight and passenger steamer, having capacity for a large amount of cargo as well as accommodation for a considerable number of cabin and steerage passengers. Many of the steamers could also be adapted to act as military transports.

Lloyd del Pacifico, Savona, was an Italian ocean liner of 5.005 tons. Originally named GERA and owned by the Norddeutscher Lloyd in the emigrant service from Germany to America.
