The Special Support Unit (SSU) is the riot police and reserve unit of the MPF. It was established in 1986. [36] The SSU consists of five operational units and a training wing. [36]

The SSU is in essence an Anti-Riot Police Formation. The main role is to maintain Law and Order in the Republic of Mauritius and its dependencies in riotous situa-tions and civil disturbances where the Regular Police is overwhelmed and in need of support. The SSU is also tasked for other duties in support to policing.
