Five principal variants of the Tunnan were produced; the first model to enter service being the J 29A fighter, the more capable J 29B and J 29E fighters, and finally the afterburner -equipped J 29F fighter. A dedicated aerial reconnaissance model, the S 29C, was also produced.

The J29F was the final variant of the J29 "Tunnan" family, used from 1955-1976, and it was the only version of the J29 able to use the RB24 AAMs, which were mostly used in case of intercepting and combat missions.

2006年10月15日 · The SAAB J29, called the “Tunnan” (barrel), was the first of a series of excellent fighters built by the Swedish company SAAB. Although it only saw action in Congo as part of the UN peacekeeping force, it was judged equivalent to the American F-86 Sabre during meetings with the USAF in Europe.

Baseline fighter version built between 1951 and 1954. Upgraded fighter introduced in 1953. It featured greater fuel capacity and accommodation for wing mounted weapons and fuel tanks. The A-29B designation was used for J-29B aircraft which served in dedicated attack units. The dedicated reconnaissance version introduced in 1954.

Among the earliest of these fighters was the SAAB J 29 "Tunnan (Barrel)", a portly aircraft that was surprisingly fast and agile, and the "SAAB 32 Lansen (Lance)" attack fighter. Both provided excellent service to the Flygvapnet, the Swedish air force. This document provides a history and description of the Tunnan and Lansen.

The Saab 29 Tunnan is a single-engine single-seat jet fighter aircraft produced by the Swedish manufacturer Saab AB, Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget. The Saab 29 was designated J 29 by the Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet). The Saab 29 was also used as a ground-attack aircraft (A 29) and as a reconaissance aircraft (S 29).

The J29F was an upgrade-program spanning from 1956 to 1958, in which 210 of the J29B and J29E models were upgraded to F-standard. F-standard meant that the aircraft would be equipped with new dog-tooth wings originally introduced on the J29E but also the afterburning engine of the scrapped J29D project.
