Each USB device that serves one purpose has to be identified by a unique VID/PID, i.e. a printer or a joystick. This makes uniquely paired VID/PID devices easy to detect and work with. If several devices of the same VID/PID are used then they have to have a unique SERIAL number each (i.e. two or more of the same model of printers).

Every USB device has a Vendor ID (VID), Product ID (PID) and optionally a serial number. The Vendor ID is intended to identify the manufacturer of a product: all USB devices from the same manufacturer should have the same VID irrespective of what they are so a mouse, a phone, a disk drive, etc. if made from the manufacturer should be the same.

An HID interface is associated with an HID device in Windows. As the host application developer sets about accessing the USB device, he or she generally knows the VID/PID pair of the device to which it is being associated, because both are usually designed by the same party. Quickly detaching one and attaching another often yields only the Detach sound in Windows, but never the re-attach. As well, it seems as if the detach notification never makes it to my app. I tested this in a USB snooper and the same thing occurs.
