Bishop Rojas, became the third Ordinary Bishop in the 41-year history of the Diocese of San Bernardino on Monday, December 28, 2020

2019年12月2日 · Bishop Alberto Rojas became the Third Ordinary Bishop of the Diocese of San Bernardino on Dec. 28 when the Vatican announced that Pope Francis had accepted the resignation of Bishop Gerald Barnes, signaling his retirement.

After years of speculation, Archbishop Jean Jadot, Apostolic Delegate to the United States announced in July of 1978 that Pope Paul VI had created the new Diocese of San Bernardino. It would be carved out of the northern half of the Diocese of San Diego – San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

The Diocese of San Bernardino was established on November 6, 1978 by Pope Paul VI. Prior to 1978, San Bernardino and Riverside counties were part of the Diocese of San Diego. San Bernardino native Phillip Straling was the founding bishop of the diocese.

On March 12, 1996, before a crowd of over 2,500 people, he was installed as the second bishop of the Diocese of San Bernardino. With over 27,000 square miles and over 1.7 million Catholics, Bishop Barnes is chief shepherd to one of the fastest growing dioceses in the nation.

Under Bishop Straling's leadership, the Diocese of San Bernardino grew from about 235,000 Catholics to more than 800,000. The number of parishes grew from 85 to 105.
