SCICON is a place where people care deeply and work hard toward the shared goal of creating a positive social environment for the students while they explore science concepts in the natural world.

After discussing the idea with many educators, a pilot program was set up in 1958 at the YMCA camp “Tulequoia,” located at Sequoia Lake. The students from six schools came up for a week to hike, study, explore nature, and learn the importance of taking care of the environment and conserving natural resources.

SCICON is located eight miles above Springville in the foothills of eastern Tulare County at an elevation between 2000 and 3500 feet above sea level. Within this 1100-acre campus are many miles of hiking trails, a museum of natural history, planetarium, observatory, raptor center and amphitheater for evening activities.

During this week, your child will take many educational hikes learning about the geology of SCICON, studying the plants and animals that live in and along Bear Creek, identifying the birds that live locally, understanding the importance of composting for uses in a garden, and exploring the hills of SCICON while taking the famous Sky Trail Hike ...

Camp at Scicon provides the setting for extraordinary musical experiences and outdoor adventures. Campers will participate in concert band, symphonic band, or orchestra, with opportunities to also participate in jazz band, small ensembles, master classes, student recitals, and private lessons.

SCICON is the story of the caring people of Tulare County. They care about children and about the land and they want future generations to also grow up caring about the land and the rich natural resources of Tulare County.

SCICON is the outdoor school of science and conservation operated by the Tulare County Office of Education. It is located on 1100 acres above Springville. Last year, the school was visited by over 20,000 fifth- and sixth-grade students for a one-day or week-long experience in outdoor education, natural science and conservation.
