The ASF+SDF Meta-Environment is an inter-active IDE for language prototyping, source code analysis and source-to-source transformation. It contains the implementation of SDF2 and ASF+SDF.

The Syntax Definition Formalism (SDF) is a metasyntax used to define context-free grammars: that is, a formal way to describe formal languages. It can express the entire range of context-free grammars .

The complete language is called ASF+SDF because ASF can not exist without SDF. ASF+SDF programs can be used in connection with The Meta-Environment tools to obtain an IDE for a programming language.
